Our article describes the homeowner and community benefits of ADUs, alongside a Q&A with realtor David Todd.

The December/January 2010-11 issue of NW Renovation magazine features our article, “Accessory Dwelling Units – Can Granny Flats Save the World?” as well as a nice Q&A piece about ADUs and the market with our friend and green realtor David Todd.  In the article we lay out the multiple benefits to homeowners and the community that ADUs present:

  • Benefit #1: Flexible Living
  • Benefit #2: Affordable and Easy to Develop
  • Benefit #3: Small Footprint
  • Benefit #4: Embedded in Vibrant Neighborhoods
  • Benefit #5: Positive Cash Flow

The article also features nice photos of a pair of ADU projects designed by our frequent collaborators at Departure Design.

The article is available online at NW Renovation’s website, or you can download and view it in pdf form here.  (Or you can find the latest print issue at one of the locale’s listed below.)

Modern remodel of traditional home covered by The Oregonian’s Bridget Otto.

Our recent collaboration with Ben Waechter (Atelier Waechter), Trisha Guido (Relish Design), and client Allison Sneider is featured today by The Oregonian’s Homes & Gardens section in a cover story article.  Writer Bridget Otto does a beautiful job weaving together the project’s narratives and the team’s perspectives, and bright designlab’s photos of the home shine.  Hammer & Hand’s Daniel Thomas is quoted extensively in the story, and lead carpenter Stephanie Lynch’s work is recognized.  Enjoy!

Karuna House and Pumpkin Ridge Passive House both earned 2014 Green Home of the Year Awards from Green Builder magazine this week, making Hammer & Hand the recipient of two out of the nine awards granted by the national competition.

2014 GreenBuilder media Green Home of the Year Award RecipientKaruna House, designed by Holst Architecture, won the “Best Building Science” award in recognition of its advanced, high performance building envelope. (See article here.)

Pumpkin Ridge Passive House, designed by Scott | Edwards Architecture, won the “Best Mainstream Green” award for its cost-effective approach to super-efficiency. (See article here.)

We’re proud to be in good company among award winners – see the full list here. Our friends at NK Architects received well-deserved recognition for their Stream Belmont project (“Best Infill Project”), and the excellent Grow Community on Bainbridge Island (by PHC and Davis Studio  Architecture+Design) won “Best Community Project.”

Kudos to our fellow winners, to our collaborators, and to our field crews for achieving this honor!
